Here’s what’s happening on our preserves in 2023
Merrimac Preserve
The Merrimac Preserve is open for fishing, hiking, bird watching, snow shoeing, and other low impact recreational activities. Hunting and trapping are allowed on the preserve through a special permit system. The following are activities currently scheduled by Riverland Conservancy or other conservation organizations.
March-April: Spring Prescribed Burn Season
The months of March and April are the typical spring prescribed burn season at the Merrimac Preserve. We have several prescribed burns planned each spring and will be watching weather forecasts for the ideal conditions. When we have the correct conditions, we will close areas of the preserve to conduct the burn. Usually, the areas will be reopened the next day. Please obey all trail closure signs. As you hike, notice the recently burned areas and come back and visit throughout the growing season. These areas often exhibit abundant blooming wildflowers.
April 1-2: National Wild Turkey Federation Learn to Hunt
Portions of the Merrimac Preserve will be used by hunters participating in this learn to hunt program organized by the local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. Please be aware of the presence of hunters on the preserve and pay attention to all posted signs.
